First off, realize that constant diligence is required when it comes to making the Internet a family friendly environment. Second understand what you are up against. Review the guides by: US-CERT, getnetwise.org, & yahooligans to get an idea of the things that you and your children face when surfing the Internet. Next consider some Internet filtering software. This will help control content that your children are exposed to. Finally review my list of personal recommendations. If is a simple list of steps that I do for every new computer that I set up at work. Again this is just a start. Make sure to read and understand each of the software products you use. The will not protect your child if you do not set them up properly.
The BSA has an audio cast on Internet Safety you can listen to it here: http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/cubscouts/cubcast/june2008.aspx
